The heavy industries ministry has asked US-based electric powered automobile major Tesla to first begin production of its iconic electric cars in India earlier than any tax concessions may be considered, government reasserts stated. They stated that the government isn't giving such concessions to any vehicle mobile corporation and giving duty advantages to Tesla will now no longer send a great sign to different companies which have invested billions of dollars in India.

Tesla has asked for a reduction in import duties on electric-powered vehicles (EVs) in India. At present, vehicles imported as completely built units (CBUs) appeal to customs duty starting from 60 percent to 100 percent, relying on engine size and cost, insurance, and freight (CIF) value less or above USD 40,000.

In a letter to the Department of Roads, the US Company had stated that the effective import duty of 110 percent for vehicles with a customs value of more than 40,000 US dollars was "prohibited" for zero-emission vehicles. Tesla asked the government to standardize the electric vehicle tax rate at 40%, regardless of the customs value, and remove the 10% social security surcharge for electric vehicles. Besides, firm further stated that these changes would fuel the development of India's electric vehicle ecosystem and that the company would make significant direct investments in sales, service and charging infrastructure; and significantly increase the acquisitions from India for its global operations.

The company argued that these proposals would not negatively impact the Indian auto market as there are currently no Indian OEMs that manufacture vehicles (EVs or ICEs) at sale prices. More than $ 40,000 and only 12% of cars are sold. in India (EV or ICE). Trade Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said Tesla has a great opportunity to open a plant in India amid the country's push to develop cars. The Minister of Roads said that it would be economically profitable here.
