Polestar 3 will be US-built electric performance SUV in 2022

Simply called the 3, following Polestar's numerical naming strategy, the SUV are going to be the primary Volvo Group car to use parent company Geely's new SEA architecture.

"From now on, the USA is not any longer an export market but a home market."

The US is that the world's second-biggest global marketplace for EVs, following China, where Polestar models are currently built.

The 3 are going to be built at Volvo's Ridgehill facility in South Carolina, alongside the present S60 and therefore the next-generation XC90, in line with the electrical performance brand's global aspirations.

Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath said: "The Polestar 3 are going to be inbuilt America for our American customers. I remember the good response once I first shared Polestar's vision here within the USA, and i am proud that our first SUV are going to be manufactured in South Carolina.

Benefits folks production are said include shortened delivery times for American customers and reduced environment impact from shipping cars round the world. it'll also, claims Polestar, allow the three to be offered at a competitive price point.

The styling of the three remains covert before its official unveiling, but design boss Max Missoni previously told Autocar that the futuristic Precept concept will have an important influence.

"The design language of that car are some things that you simply can and will expect in our future cars, starting with the Polestar 3," he said.

The 3 are going to be positioned as a rival to the Jaguar I-Pace and Tesla Model X, with the ocean underpinnings expected to supply competitive levels of performance.

The first car to use that platform, the Chinese Zeekr 001 estate car , claims up to 435 miles of range from its largest (100kWh) battery and uses a 536bhp twin-motor powertrain to realize 0-62mph in 3.8sec.

The taller 3 will have less of attention on outright pace, but Polestar has confirmed that it'll emphasise aerodynamic efficiency, likely with the aim of maximising range.

Other features include a Google-developed infotainment system, as employed by the Polestar 2, and a variety of "high-end, safety focussed autonomous driving features".

As with the two , Polestar is predicted to supply a fanatical Performance Pack for the three , bringing uprated suspension and brakes.
