Is there a case to be made for an all-electric Porsche 911 in the future?

In an interview with Autocar UK, Porsche's design boss Michael Mauer stated that electric cars provide vehicle designers more freedom. He also stated that the Porsche 911's existing rear-engine arrangement is the reason that converting it to an EV is tough. He did not, however, rule out the possibility of converting the Porsche 911 to an all-electric vehicle.

Porsche CEO Oliver Blume had previously dismissed the prospect of developing an electric 911. The Porsche 911, he stated, will be the final model to go electric. Mauer has now stated that the 911 will not be abandoned. This also suggests that the car will lose its ICE arrangement in favor of all-electric propulsion, as the European Union countries are enacting stricter regulations for fossil fuel powertrains. Several European governments have set timelines for the phase-out of gasoline and diesel automobiles.

In that situation, the only way for the Porsche 911 to survive in the future is to convert to an electric vehicle. This shift, however, will not occur anytime soon. According to the Porsche designer, the back overhang of automobiles in the next 15 years should be about two meters to accommodate all necessary equipment. As a result, creating an electric 911 will be easy.

When asked about the next-generation Porsche 911, Mauer stated that it would be powered by a combustion engine. Before Porsche invests in a completely electric version of the legendary automobile, it's possible that a hybrid 911 will be introduced.

A hybrid 911 Turbo prototype was recently sighted testing at the Nurburgring. This would eventually boost the Porsche 911's power and performance. The current model, which was introduced in 2018, has the potential to accommodate both a mild hybrid and a plug-in hybrid system.
